Glossary

APN
Associated Provider Network - a group of providers who contract with the North Sound Regional Support Network to provide mental health services to residents of Snohomish, Skagit, Island, San Juan, and Whatcom counties of Washington State.

behavioral health
Term used to refer to both mental health and/or chemical dependency issues

brief solution-focused therapy
Time limited therapy that works on resolving a specific problem

bona fide
in good faith

chronic mental illness
A mental illness which is severe, persistent, and long term in nature.

continuum of care
A range of treatment options (intensive - less intensive; inpatient - outpatient)

cognitive behavioral services
A form of therapy that helps individuals understand and change their behavior.

Crime Victims Compensation
Government funding provided for medical care (including counseling) to victims of crimes.

Dialectic-Behavioral Treatment Model
A treatment model used to meet the needs of individuals with severe and/or persistent personality disorders.

Healthy Communities of Snohomish County Initiative
The Healthy Communities Initiative is part of a national and international effort to enhance the health and well-being of individuals and communities through clearly focused, collaborative local efforts.

modality
A way of receiving services, for example: groups, individual, classes, or medication.

NSRSN
North Sound Regional Support Network - the entity that manages federal dollars and oversees the mental health care provided by agencies with which it contracts, including the APN, in NW Washington (Snohomish, Whatcom, Island, San Juan, and Skagit counties).

ombudsperson
A person who investigates complaints from consumers and advocates for their rights.

PCP
Primary Care Provider--The individual's primary medical health care provider.

pre-authorization of services
Some insurance companies require that the patient obtain authorization from them for services before scheduling the first appointment.

provider
An entity that is giving service to the patient. May indicate the company or organization, or refer to an individual mental health professional.

psycho-educational
A way of learning that supports behavioral change.

WAC
Washington Administrative Code (state regulations)

United Way Affiliate Agency
A social service agency which receives funding from United Way.
